Table Scraps: July 4th
So, Seattle’s fireworks have been canceled (thank goodness; I wanna stop the spread, y’all). What’s up in your town? Here are some good rules of paw to help calm your pets during fireworks. And if you’re socially distancing outside, grilling and picnicking, keep in mind that not all foods are a-okay for dogs (or other pets). Typically you need to avoid the actual table scraps. I baked some chicken thighs yesterday for these two rascals and stuck to the basics - chicken, rice, carrots, and green beans. Avoid garlic, onions, xylitol, grapes, and unfortunately, many more.
If you’re here, you probably love pets. But if you also love graphic, colorful, amazing, cute, beautiful art, check this out: WONDERPETS 2 Art Show: Where Pets are our Super Heroes! curated by Leanna Lin + Miranda Dressler. I’m in love: “We invite you to celebrate all the weird and wonderful ways pets make life totally SUPER! Dogs, cats, bunnies, pigs and other furry, scaly and feathered friends are all featured in paintings, prints and sculptures from 45 artists. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Home Dog LA, a pet intervention program located at our local North Central Animal Shelter. The show runs from June 27 to July 31, 2020; art is shipped the first week of August.” So many good ones have sold out already, but there’s still much cuteness left!
This is a fascinating article about how veterinarians can incorporate shamanism into their practice. And speaking of vets, here’s some essential reading: Addressing the dismal lack of diversity in veterinary medicine, by Chris Hollingsworth. Originally shared by a writer I respect very much, JoAnna Pendergrass.
While today may be Independence Day, many of us don’t feel like celebrating America, unless we’re celebrating the future that supports #BlackLivesMatter and anti-racism, one that recognizes science and hopefully finds a vaccine for COVID-19. It’s rough right now, and it’s been rough for way too long. Keep fighting the good fight.
