Table Scraps: Frito Feet

So many toys. So little time.

So many toys. So little time.

Today I’m thinking about pitter paws and how they have a pretty standard smell for dogs: Fritos. Corn chips. Tostitos. Even popcorn. You know the smell I’m talking about? Well, the Dodo has a great article on Frito feet; basically, it’s due to a common bacteria that lives even on clean pup paws. But, more importantly, I want to know — do cat paws have a standard smell? My friend and cat advisor, Emily, says that cat paws do not regularly smell of corn chips, and that it’s typically just a dog thing. What do your cats smell like?

Speaking of snacks, if you’re following quarantine cooking trends, apparently everyone is really into sourdough starters, focaccia, lasagna (and lasagna memes)... but I have yet to see a pet-friendly focaccia recipe. I’ll do some digging. There’s also a Garfield joke in here somewhere, but I am a little slow on the uptake today to make it work.

Otherwise, how is your quarantine going? Do you need a cute book recommendation? I loved May Sarton’s Fur Person, a charming fiction about her own cat prior to meeting her. If you’d like to dive into some first person narratives about how dogs helped people turn their lives around, check out Catalyst Dogs. The visuals alone are stunning. And in the news: while you can’t get covid-19 from domestic animals, can you give your pets the virus? Researchers at the University of Washington and Washington State University are investigating how the disease can be passed from humans to dogs, cats, and ferrets.

That’s it for this week. Stay safe, stay sane.
