Table Scraps: Pet Parenting in the Time of COVID-19
Lots and lots has happened in the past two months. For example, I started working from home exclusively and quarantining on March 4. It is now April 26, and I’ve been laid off. Never in a million years would any of us have thought that 2020 was going to be this difficult.
So - how many of your pets loved it the first week and now are acting insane? SAME. My dogs are acting downright spoiled at this point, and sometimes a little irritated? I wonder how many cat parents are noticing their kitties shooting death glares? What else have you noticed about your pet parenting? I’m so grateful I have the dogs to get me outside and provide some company. But it is a lot of pet-time, no joke. And that makes me wonder -- just how bad will the separation anxiety be when this ends (Lord, let it end soon)?
Luckily, though, some of our favorite stores are still open for delivery or curbside pickup. I’d love to have specific state posts calling out your favorites. This includes pet supply stores, delivery services, veterinarians, dog walkers, and more. Each page will be dedicated to one of the 50 states, then Puerto Rico and anywhere else I get submissions from.
Hit me up at monpetitchewchew@gmail.com and I’ll create pages for each state.
In the meantime, looking for something to read or dance to? The New Yorker’s Quarantine Tips from My Cat made me laugh, especially the bit about screaming at 6am. Is it just me or does Fleetwood Mac’s Everywhere make you think of your pet stalking you? I swear this is Little Coconut’s theme song for me. Wanna know more about Andy Warhol’s cats and dogs? His dachshund Archie was especially loved: “Andy took Archie to his studio, to art openings, and Ballato’s Restaurant on Houston Street… Archie was always on Andy’s lap, eating bits of food that he was handed [and] was always carefully hidden under Andy’s napkin just in case a restaurant health inspector would happen to come by.” And don’t forget: your pet can’t give you COVID-19. But you sure as heck can get it from another human. So on that note,
Stay safe! Stay sane.
